How to film better videos with the phone you already have

Decide where the video will be watched

Framing starts before recording. For a vertical Reel or Short, turn the phone vertically and check the space around your face, hands and any important objects. For a horizontal video, compose for that shape from the start.

Write one sentence describing the main idea and three things you want to show. You do not need to memorize an entire script, but you should know what someone needs to understand by the end. Plan a close-up if you demonstrate a process: hands doing the work can explain things a shot of your face cannot.

Prepare the space in four steps

1. Clean and stabilize

   Clean the lens and support the phone securely. Check that it will not tilt or fall when you touch the screen.

2. Find simple light

   Try soft window light, facing the window or slightly to one side. Avoid starting with a very bright window behind you.

3. Listen to the room

   Pause and listen for fans, traffic or appliances. Move close enough to the microphone without covering it, and try another position if your voice sounds distant.

4. Record ten seconds

   Speak at your real recording volume, move your hands as you intend to and play the test through headphones.

Record in a way that makes editing easier

Leave a little space before and after each section. If you make a mistake, pause and repeat the complete sentence. That is often easier to edit than stitching individual words together. Keep a similar position between takes if you want to avoid obvious jumps.

Silence notifications and check battery and storage. Test the actual settings you plan to use, especially after switching cameras or apps. Do not choose a higher resolution purely for the number: consider available storage and whether your equipment can edit it comfortably.

Review before packing up

Watch at least the beginning, a middle section and the end. Check focus, sound and whether important objects are cropped out. Repeating a take now is easier than rebuilding the setup tomorrow.

Copy the footage into a folder named by date and topic. Keep the originals until editing and publication are finished. If an address, private notification or someone who should not appear is visible, resolve that before sharing the video.

• Voice checked through headphones, not only the phone speaker.
• Files saved and important takes reviewed.
