How to create your first YouTube channel
A Google Account and a YouTube channel are not the same thing. To publish your own videos, create a channel and give visitors a clear idea of what they can expect from you.
Before you create the channel
Choose a Google Account you control, with a recovery email you can still open. If you use several accounts, check the avatar first: it is easy to build everything in the wrong session. You do not need a finished visual identity to begin.
- A name that is easy to say and recognize.
- A profile image that remains clear at a small size.
- One sentence explaining what you will share and who it is for.
Create your channel in a browser
Check your account
Open YouTube on a computer or its mobile website and sign in with your Google Account.
Open channel management
Use your profile menu to open Settings. Under Account, find the option to add or manage channels, then create one.
Give it a name
Add a profile image, a channel name and an available handle. Check the spelling before confirming.
Visit the result
Finish creating the channel and open its public profile. Save that link separately from your management screen.
Make the profile sound like you
Write a specific description. “Vegetarian dinners I make after work” sets a clearer expectation than “content for everyone.” Where it makes sense, use consistent spelling across your image, channel and other profiles.
Before spending an afternoon on the banner, write down three videos you could actually make. Pick a subject you can explain with your existing knowledge and equipment. Your channel should help you publish, not become a design project you never finish. A simple, coherent profile is enough to get your first idea moving.
When a feature is missing
Some tools require account verification or additional eligibility. Phone verification that unlocks certain features is different from the channel verification badge. Follow the process shown by YouTube itself.
Supervised accounts may have restrictions on creating channels. If you see a notice, check the official help rather than changing details to bypass it. Before sharing your channel, confirm that the name, image and links belong to the profile you intended to create.
